Our Afghan Friends – They Work, They Contribute, They Thrive!

For the past year and a half, I have had the privilege of working closely with several members of the Afghan communities in the greater Washington, D.C. area through my involvement with two non-profit organizations, VECINA and Catholic Charities. It brings me great pride to serve as a pro bono attorney and advocate for those who have found refuge in the United States after fleeing Afghanistan following the terrifying Taliban takeover on August 15, 2021. Immersing myself in the fabric of our country’s diverse society and working alongside the vibrant Afghan community is a true privilege.

Today, I’m thrilled to discuss something that perfectly aligns with my passion – a beacon of hope and continuation of our shared journey. As many of you may know, on September 25, 2023, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced the extension and redesignation of Afghanistan for Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Reflecting on the flavorful aromas wafting from Afghani kitchens and the colorful tales from an age-old culture meeting the new world, I have been enriched by the inexhaustible spirit of the Afghan people. Their resilience and courage fuel their strides in their new homeland. Now, with this extension AND redesignation of TPS for those who are eligible, they are being offered a more prolonged respite.

This positive development is a testament to the United States’ commitment to providing short-term haven to our Afghan friends navigating the waves of extraordinary transitional circumstances. As an Immigration attorney and as a friend, I delight in sharing this uplifting extension. My commitment to champion the cause remains resolute, fueled by the strength and adaptability of the Afghan community.

Let’s not forget that every member of our community contributes to its vibrancy. Afghans in our neighborhoods, who fled their homeland after the 2021 Taliban takeover, have shown remarkable resilience. They have enriched their new communities with their unique perspectives and diverse heritage while also learning to navigate unfamiliar cultural landscapes. They work, they contribute, they thrive. Every day, in ways large and small, they remarkably weave their vibrant threads into the great American tapestry. Their contributions go beyond food, language, art, or music – they stretch and uplift the spirit of community, making our neighborhoods more inclusive and our nation stronger.

I urge everyone to acknowledge the resilience and courage of our Afghan friends and neighbors. They made a daunting journey under challenging circumstances, and they continue to make positive impacts in their communities every day. This TPS extension and redesignation shines as a testament to their determination and our collective capacity for compassion and understanding.
