NLG Mass Defense Hotline

The NLG Mass Defense Committee and NLG South Solidarity has launched a legal support hotline to address the needs of Black and Brown people, organizations, and communities local to the Weelaunee Forest in Atlanta, as well as national protesters. This hotline is staffed primarily by BIPOC attorneys and legal workers.

Call the hotline: 404-458-9449

WHAT WE CAN PROVIDE

  • Know Your Rights information, especially specific considerations for folks targeted by law enforcement. Examples include:
    • “I am non-binary. What do I need to know about potential housing in jail if I’m arrested during a protest?”
    • “If I am undocumented, what should I bring and NOT bring to protest?”
  • Information on risk and organizing
  • Connections to lawyers
  • Connections to bail support resources
  • Legal observers for protests

WHAT WE CAN’T PROVIDE

  • We cannot guarantee that your call will immediately be connected, especially if there is a high number of callers to the hotline. However, we will follow up with you as soon as possible.
  • All calls to the hotline are free, but we cannot promise that you will have free representation from a NLG lawyer.

Please Be Aware:

Lawyers and legal workers who staff the jail support hotline will not and can not impart any legal advice, and the presence of the phone line does not create nor constitute an attorney-client relationship. However, with the permission of the caller, the Hotline will make efforts to connect callers with attorneys who may be able to help. Please know that the choice of hiring any attorney is always the choice of the defendant alone – even if financial support, media publicity, or legal fees are offered.

About the NLG Mass Defense Committee and NLG South Solidarity:

The genesis of the Mass Defense Committee (MDC) is found in the fertile ground of Black revolutionary liberation. NLG South Solidarity is a grassroots group of law students, legal workers, and lawyers based in Atlanta and the South more broadly. The group is composed of Atlanta NLG, University of Georgia (UG), NLG Jackson, Mississippi, NLG Nashville, Black Alliance for Peace (BAP), and NLG executive members.

The NLG Mass Defense Committee and NLG South Solidarity are hosting this telephone legal support hotline to address the needs of Black and Brown people, organizations and communities local to the Atlanta Forest, and national protesters. The purpose of the hotline is to work in direct solidarity with movement-led organizing, particularly BIPOC communities, and to support the interests of communities most impacted by oppressive systems, repressive tactics, organizations and communities local to the Atlanta Forest, and national protesters to whom direct jail support may not be readily available.
