Call for 2025 Resolutions, Amendments, and Candidates for National Office!

Please note the deadline for submitting resolutions and amendments is July 18th, 2025.

As a democratic organization, the work and focus of the NLG is decided by our members. Each year, we hold plenaries in which members discuss programmatic priorities, often in the form of resolutions. We also update our governing documents, our Bylaws and Constitution, and elect new officers to serve on the NLG National Executive Committee (NEC).

In 2025, governance matters will be handled during the NLG Governance Plenaries on September 27th-28th. The plenaries will be open to all current NLG members. All voting will take place online after the plenaries.

All information about elections and submitting proposals for resolutions or amendments can be found at https://www.nlg.org/2025-nlg-resolutions-amendments-and-elections/

Call to Join the 2025 Governance Committee, Resolutions Committee, and the Plenary/Podium Committee!

Every year, our members convene to get the important work of governance at the national convention. Joining the following committees is open to all members who wish to participate in shaping the Guild's future, correcting past mistakes, and setting the agenda and priorities for our organization.

Governance Committee: The members of the Governance Committee are expected to read and understand the Guild governing documents (Constitution and Bylaws) and have knowledge of our formal resolutions. Members will be responsible for: interpreting these documents to apply to current situations that come up in the NLG, assessing where amendments to our governing documents could be helpful, and drafting new governance policies or amendments to the governing documents to be proposed and voted on by the NLG membership. The GC is open to all current NLG members and is chaired by a NEC member.

Resolutions Committee: A Resolutions Committee is established whose purposes include: drafting or encouraging the drafting of resolutions which are presented at national meetings; functioning as a subcommittee of the Podium Committee at national meetings; reviewing all resolutions which are presented to that meeting. The Committee may also work with the National Executive Committee if resolutions are presented to that body. The members of the Resolutions Committee shall be selected by the National Executive Committee. All members of this Committee shall serve for a term from the convention at which they are selected until the next convention.

Plenary/Podium Committee: This committee is organized at the discretion of the current President (and President-Elect) to assist with the annual governance plenaries. Positions on the committee are at the invitation of the President, and typically last from about 1 month before the annual plenaries until the end of the plenaries. This role involved making the plenary agenda, contacting proponents and candidates for office, preparing materials for the plenaries, and facilitating the plenaries on-site.

If you are interested in joining, please send an email to president@nlg.org.

NLG International Committee and CUNY4Palestine Sanctuary University Organizing Resources!

Here is a link to the Toolkit for Sanctuary University Organizing, which lists more specific action items for each of the different ideas listed above. This toolkit includes links to online resources and Know Your Rights materials, boilerplate letter templates for faculty engagement, and more.

The Palestinian Youth Movement shared these questions which are helpful for focusing and centering your organizing efforts on your own campuses in your own individual chapters.
    1. What does coordinated action and offensive strategy look like in this moment - on the level of media/coordinated tactics/sharing materials, otherwise?
    2. How are your orgs/groups orienting around the repression? what are some developments on your campuses?
    3. What are the needs of your organizations (such as media trainings, clearer understandings of Executive Orders/task forces and knowledge around shifting legal landscape, KYR resources, centralizing/disseminating legal resources and guides)

Please also check out the Labor4Palestine national networking invitation. Here is a link to the L4P website as well. If you have any questions about involvement or connecting, please reach out to info@laborforpalestine.net.

Some other folks shared resources they have used and implemented at their own schools: here is a form drafted to help coordinate a network of sanctuary campuses in conjunction with Migration Scholars Collaborative, and here is a link to the UC People’s Tribunal website. If your chapter wants to develop similar initiatives, these can provide some great insight and inspiration.

NLG Military Law Task Force welcomes court ruling protecting transgender military servicemembers

The Military Law Task Force of the National Lawyers Guild welcomes the opinion of U.S. District Court Judge Ana Reyes issued on March 18, 2025, protecting military transgender servicemembers.

The order was the result of a lawsuit asking for declaratory and injunctive relief filed by eight transgender servicemembers challenging executive order 14183 disqualifying transgender troops and the subsequent DoD policy implementing the order. The court noted that, “Collectively, the active-duty Plaintiffs have served in the U.S. military honorably and with distinction for over 130 years.”

The recording of this event is now available to watch!

As threats against immigrants multiply, so do risks for those advocating with them at different points of intervention. The new Trump administration has stated its intent to use laws to prosecute “immigration-related violations,” which can extend to individuals who help and advocate on behalf of non-U.S. citizens. In the past, the federal government has utilized a federal crime against immigrant advocates, 8 U.S.C. § 1324(a)(1)(A), “Bringing In and Harboring Certain” Non-U.S. Citizens. View this recording of the National Lawyers Guild, the National Immigration Project, and Southern Coalition for Social Justice's timely webinar on this broad law and assessments of risks at different points of intervention in pro-immigrant advocacy.
