Laws treat companion animals as property, denying them and their human guardians basic rights and protections. The Center for Animal Litigation pursues legal challenges to combat archaic and constitutionally infirm laws to save the lives of companion animals and advance their rights under the law. Much of our work involves defending animals and their guardians in dog bite and dangerous dog proceedings where the animals' lives are at stake. Our efforts also develop new laws and doctrines to provide animals a unique legal status within and beyond the well-settled doctrines of property law.
