An NLG member lawyer helped to successfully push back an administrative attack on pro-Palestine students at Portland State University. Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights (SUPER) have led protests on campus since Israel’s genocidal war began in October 2023. Throughout, PSU administrators have brought disciplinary charges against the organization and its leadership, using methods that lacked due process and procedural transparency. This follows a national pattern of bureaucratic repression across campuses targeting the pro-Palestine movement. Since Trump came to power, the pressure on colleges and universities has only grown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this case, disciplinary measures were brought against the student organization for a protest held in January of this year. The charges were vague, lacking references to the Code of Conduct, and provided no evidence. PSU staff also refused to engage with the students’ legal counsel, NLG member Mark Kramer, claiming that students should see the suspension of their right to representation as an “educational opportunity.” PSU faculty, on the other hand, showed up to support SUPER. Ultimately, after repeated requests for clarification and documentation by first Kramer and then the students themselves, PSU unceremoniously dropped the charges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For years now, we’ve seen US and Israeli politicians smearing the movement for Palestinian freedom as “anti-Semitic”, arguing that criticism of the Israeli state is tantamount to an attack on all Jewish people. This despite the fact that groups like Jewish Voices for Peace have continued to grow in size and prominence. However, with Trump now leading the reaction, we’ve seen a broader attack on international students, professors and researchers. Combined with the assault on immigrants, this signals growing state violence against those deemed politically or socially undesirable by Trump and his allies.
