NLG Mass Defense Committee in Solidarity with Brigada Legal Solidaria

The Mass Defense Committee (MDC) of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) is proud to stand in solidarity with Brigada Legal Solidaria and to celebrate this inspiring group of lawyers and legal workers in Puerto Rico as they receive the NLG’s Arthur Kinoy Award at the 2019 #Law4thePeople Convention.
Brigada Legal Solidaria was founded in 2017 and is led in part by NLG members Mariana Nogales and Nicole Díaz. Since their founding, they have been working tirelessly to confront police abuses of protesters on the islands of Puerto Rico, most recently in the protests that filled the streets to demand that (now former) governor Ricardo Rosselló resign. Their work in support of activists on the ground continues, both through legal observing at protests and representing activists in the courts. This is despite attempts on social media by the local police union to intimidate the Brigada, and Mariana specifically, after the Brigade collected complaints about police misconduct during the mass demonstrations which forced the governor from office.
Brigada Legal Solidaria deserves to be recognized for their fearless organizing and support of movements for social justice. The MDC is proud to help celebrate them at this year’s NLG convention in Durham, NC on October 16-20.
We encourage all NLG members to learn more about Brigada Legal Solidaria by following them online on Facebook and @brigadalegal on Twitter and Instagram) and donating to support their work.
In solidarity,
Steering Committee of the Mass Defense Committee
