NLG Files Urgent Appeal Request to UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Citing Life-Threatening Denial of Medical Care to Mumia Abu-Jamal

NEW YORK— Members of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) Heidi Boghosian and Natsu Saito, with Kathleen Cleaver of the Human Rights Research Fund, today delivered an Urgent Appeal Request on behalf of Mumia Abu-Jamal to Juan Méndez, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture.  The Request addresses the life-threatening denial of medical care to the 61-year-old journalist, political activist, and human rights defender who has been described as “perhaps America’s most famous prisoner.”

The Maryland Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) decries the arrests of twelve NLG Legal Observers on Saturday night. Wearing clearly identifiable green hats with the words “National Lawyers Guild Legal Observer” printed on them, these neutral observers were documenting police behavior during the enforcement of Baltimore’s curfew.

The NLG stands in solidarity with Baltimore protesters as they call for justice for Freddie Gray. The NLG National Office has been working with lawyers and organizers on the ground to provide legal support for this weeks ongoing actions. Our mass defense coordinator, Abi Hassen will be joining the legal defense team in Baltimore today. YThere is an immediate need for legal observers and lawyers - especially those of you licensed to practice in Maryland. Folks are also needed to provide jail support and criminal defense for people who are arrested.

NLG Calls on President Obama to Withdraw Executive Order Declaring Venezuela National Security Threat

NEW YORK—On March 8, 2015, President Obama issued Executive Order (EO) 13692, which declared a national emergency, calling Venezuela “an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States,” and imposed sanctions on several Venezuelan officials. Now that he has publicly backpedalled on his claim, the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) calls on him to immediately withdraw the executive order.
