The NLG National Office is excited to announce a new resource now available on our website called NLG Scholars -- a list of our members who are law school professors, past NLG presidents, and practitioners with decades of experience. Please take a look and keep this list in mind when you need speakers for events and conferences, legal experts to quote in media outlets, or mentors for our students and recent grads.
Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights (LPHR), Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association (Addameer) and the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) are deeply appalled at the sentencing of leading Palestinian human rights defender, Ms Khalida Jarrar, to 15 months imprisonment by an Israeli military court on 7 December 2015. She was further fined 10,000 NIS and given a suspended sentence of 12 months within a 5 year period.
It's been quite a year for the National Lawyers Guild. Here are just a few ways the NLG worked toward a more just world in 2015. Like what you see? Join the Guild and/or make a year-end contribution (which can tax-deductible) to the NLG today! Our work is funded by the generosity of our members and supporters. We do not accept corporate or governmental funds.
Since I joined our National Office staff as the Executive Director last January, I have been inspired by the commitment of our staff, members, committees, board, and donors to the mission of the NLG. Because of your support, for the first time in many years, the National Office is fully staffed. Celebrate #GivingTuesday by donating to the Guild to help keep the movement going strong into 2016!
The Anti-Racism Committee (ARC), The United People of Color Caucus (TUPOCC), and the National Immigration Project (NIP) of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) stand in solidarity with Syrian and Iraqi refugees who seek protection in the United States, and oppose recent actions by Congress and states to block these refugees from settling here.
We're hiring a Director of Mass Defense to coordinate all aspects of our national protest support program. If you have experience in community organizing, legal support/observing, and legal activism, we want to hear from you!
At its annual Law for the People Convention held this year in Oakland, CA, NLG membership voted to pass two resolutions: one supporting the abolition of prisons, and another calling on the US Government to formally normalize relations with Cuba—both of which exemplify the Guild's mission of holding human rights over property interests.
The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) in coordination with the International Leonard Peltier Defense Committee sent a letter urging President Obama to grant Executive Clemency to 71-year-old political prisoner and Native American activist, Leonard Peltier.
The NLG and NLG-NYC Chapter are co-convenors of the International Tribunal of Conscience of Peoples in Movement (ITCPM) to take place in New York City, September 25-27, 2015. The Tribunal coincides with the one-year anniversary of the kidnapping and forced disappearance of 43 students in Ayotzinapa.
