\"Support\/JoinThe National Lawyers Guild and its upcoming delegation to Mexico will be participating in the\u00a0International Tribunal of Conscience<\/a>\u00a0which will take place in Mexico from September 23-30, 2017. \u00a0This Tribunal will take place at the site of the Ayotzinapa school were 43 students were disappeared in September 2014 while on their way to a demonstration.\u00a0 This is a follow-up to the Tribunal that took place in\u00a0New York City in September 2015<\/a>, on the first anniversary of the disappearance.\u00a0 The Guild has been a co-sponsor of these Tribunals and sponsored a\u00a0planning delegation<\/a>\u00a0last fall for the upcoming Tribunal.<\/p>\n

Earlier this summer, the New York Times revealed that the Mexican government used\u00a0spyware purchased from an Israeli firm<\/a>\u00a0to hack the phones of international investigators appointed by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Questions about the case and the use of the spyware remain unanswered.<\/p>\n

The disappearance of the 43 students caused a huge uproar in Mexico, as the Times described in the article:\u00a0 \u201cThe\u00a0disappearance of the students<\/a>\u00a0in September 2014 ignited an enormous outcry in Mexico. Hundreds of thousands poured into the streets to protest a case that, to many, represented all that afflicts Mexico, a nation where about 30,000 people have disappeared and more than 100,000 have been killed in the decade-long churn of the drug war.\u2019<\/p>\n

An additional part of the Tribunal will take place at La 72, a Franciscan shelter for migrants located at Mexico\u2019s southern border with Guatemala \u2014 where border enforcement is supported by the US \u2014 and will take testimony on the continuing terror in Mexico against migrants from Central America.<\/p>\n
