One way that NLG-LA members create meaningful change is through our committees. Each committee brings passionate individuals who make a tangible impact in our community. Whether you’re interested in getting involved or want to learn more about NLG-LA, we invite you to explore each committee’s vital work!
Immigration Committee
The NLG-LA Immigration Committee fights for immigrant rights through an intersectional and anti-racist lens.
The Committee:
(1) promotes radical and rebellious advocacy through education and collective problem-solving;
(2) uplifts and supports systemically oppressed immigrant rights advocates;
(3) listens and learns from the communities we serve towards liberation and co-creates tools to fight the system; and
(4) strives to dismantle and disrupt racist, unjust, hegemonic laws and systems.

Housing Committee
The NLG-LA Housing Committee is a community of advocates fighting for tenants in the courts and on the streets.

Black and People of African Descent Task Force
LA is a multicultural city, and NLG-LA needs to meet the needs of the communities we work with. NLG-LA’s Black and People of African Descent Task Force (BPAD) builds the Chapter’s capacity to meet the increased demand for Black Legal Observers and provides broader legal support in the City of Los Angeles and LA County.
The Task Force:
- Develops an outreach program to encourage Black law associations,
Black Law Students Association (BLSA), as well as Black paralegal
and community member participation in the Legal Observer program; - Apprentices Black NLG-LA members to assume leadership roles in the Legal Observer program; and
- Creates legal education programs for the Black community and Black activist organizations.

Mass Defense Committee
The NLG-LA Mass Defense Committee (MDC) provides legal support to activists and organizers in the Los Angeles area. NLG-LA believes that policing, prisons, and legal systems uphold unjust structures rooted in white supremacy, exploitation, patriarchy, and violence. Accordingly, the MDC is grounded in abolitionist principles.
The MDC:
- Creates educational materials and trainings;
- Works with NLG-LA’s Legal Observer team and network of attorneys, legal workers, law students, and activists to support movements fighting the system; and
- Advocates for the end of policing and imprisonment.
