{"id":1110,"date":"2020-12-21T16:34:39","date_gmt":"2020-12-21T21:34:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nlg.org\/guild-notes\/?post_type=article&#038;p=1110"},"modified":"2020-12-22T18:13:08","modified_gmt":"2020-12-22T23:13:08","slug":"an-announcement-from-pooja-gehi-transitioning-from-executive-director-to-member","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.nlg.org\/guild-notes\/article\/an-announcement-from-pooja-gehi-transitioning-from-executive-director-to-member\/","title":{"rendered":"Pooja Gehi Transitions from NLG Executive Director to Member"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The following statement was posted to nlg.org on December 3, 2020<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am writing to share that after five years as Executive Director of the NLG, I have stepped down to focus on my writing and lawyering for social justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has been an honor and privilege to lead the NLG in our ongoing work to unite lawyers, law students, legal workers, and jailhouse lawyers in service of people and the planet, not profit. In the last five years, we have quadrupled our membership and increased our budget, with over $1 million in new donations just in the last six months. We have committed to prison abolition, and furthered our existing commitment to Palestinian solidarity and the Boycott, Divest, &amp; Sanction (BDS) movement. We have supported water protectors in Standing Rock and Black Lives Matter protesters around the country. We have educated our members and the public about bail funds, refugee caravans, and criminalization related to COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While leaving this position is not easy, it feels good to know that the NLG is now stronger than I found it. I appreciate the NLG and have every confidence that NLG board, staff, and members will continue to lead and build in ways the world needs in coming years.
