The agenda included opening remarks, introductions, a Constitution & By-Laws Jeopardy game, discussions on structure, membership, and NEC expectations, a finance report and budget review, and an introduction to the Foundation and fundraising.

Attendees included Ria (President), Andy Williams Jr (Law Worker Vice President), Daniel (National Lawyers Guild Foundation), Fiona Hellerman (Student National Vice President), Justice Gatson (The United People Of Color Caucus), Khanstoshea Zingapan (Vice President), Joel Kuperfman (Environmental Justice Committee), Annie Wilson (EEnvironmental Justice Committee), B. Key Discussion Points and Decisions

Finance and Budget: The NEC reviewed prior year budgets, noting that expenses are increasing and exceeding income, leading to a double deficit. Two proposed budgets were presented, differing based on whether the convention would be in-person or virtual. Both budgets would require using savings. The NEC discussed the need for a clear fundraising plan and considered various solutions, including membership drives, donor relations, and potentially using funds from the NLG Foundation to hire professional fundraisers.

Ultimately, both proposed budgets were voted down, and the Finance Committee was tasked with preparing a revised budget with a comprehensive fundraising plan for the Q2 meeting.

Fundraising: Daniel from the NLG Foundation (NLG-F) presented on the Foundation's role in supporting the NLG through tax-deductible donations and grants, noting the importance of diversifying income streams. NEC members committed to making fundraising calls.

Convention Planning: The NEC discussed the 2025 convention, considering dates, formats (in-person, virtual, or hybrid), and locations, with Detroit being a potential location. A motion was passed to hold the convention on September 26-28.

The NEC favored an in-person, condensed convention and decided to invite committee members to biweekly convention planning meetings.

NEC Meetings: The NEC decided to have two in-person and two virtual meetings, but due to financial constraints, all meetings might be virtual. Dates were set for the Q2 (5/17-18), Q3 (9/26-28), and Q4 (11/1-2) meetings.

Appointments: The NEC unanimously approved the Executive Council's (EC) appointments of Lee as North West Regional Rep, Fiona as senior SNVP, and Jo as permanent ED.

Unlock The Bar and the NLG are Seeking Survey Responses!

In collaboration with Unlock the Bar, NLG is encouraging recent law school graduates--and barred attorneys in general--to share their experiences going through the Character and Fitness review process using UTB's People’s Survey on Character and Fitness.

You can find the survey at https://www.unlockthebar.org/share-your-experience (note the password to access the survey is utb54).

Filling out this survey will help us gather data on recent trends and changes in the Character and Fitness review process, especially related to student activism. We are hoping to hear from as many people as possible in order to anticipate what support our next generation of movement lawyers might need!

Last week, Unlock the Bar and Palestine Legal, joined by the National Lawyers Guild and others, submitted a letter to each attorney licensing jurisdiction in the country, reminding the Character and Fitness Committees of their constitutional and legal obligations when evaluating applicants to the bar.

Unlock the Bar also has more excellent resources about Character and Fitness that you can check out on their website, including a Report on Abolishing the Character and Fitness Process.

Presenter: lorilei w. (they/them) is a queer, trans non-binary Korean-American abolitionist, artist, and attorney.

The training is for legal workers to learn best practices in providing KYR presentations to community members. It breaks down what legal rights are, how they are never guaranteed, and how assessing risks in taking action might be a better approach for communities in the frontlines. It includes a quick refresher of rights to be asserted when interacting with law enforcement, as well as considerations of structures of power in how the government targets certain people over others and what that means for the “rights” the some may have

Objectives:

  • Provide a framework for effective KYR trainings

  • Deconstruct what “legal rights” are to have a more critical understanding of people’s interactions with inherently violent law enforcement

  • Encourage intersectional reflection and analysis in crafting and delivering KYRs

  • Refresh basic legal rights in interacting with law enforcement

  • Troubleshoot common challenges in delivering KYRs to communities

A call for Sanctuary Universities: Resisting Trump’s Executive Order and the Assault on Free Speech, Political Dissent, and Academic Freedom

On January 29th, 2025, former President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order that poses a direct and dangerous threat to university students and academic workers across the country. This order targets those engaged in protests or speech critical of Israeli settler colonialism and genocide, falsely equating these critiques with antisemitism and threatening First Amendment and academic freedom rights. In response, the National Lawyers Guild, American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, Palestine Legal, National Students for Justice in Palestine, CUNY 4 Palestine, U.S. Palestinian Community Network, Project South, the Anti-Imperialist Scholars Collective, National Faculty for Justice in Palestine, and dozens of other organizations have united to issue a call to action. These organizations demand that universities across the country stand firm in defense of academic freedom, free speech, migrant rights, and the right of students and workers to protest.
