NLG International Committee Call For Drafters

The National Lawyers Guild is planning to submit an amicus brief in the Uhuru Movement case, about which we adopted the 2023 Resolution to Support the APSP/Uhuru 3 and Challenge FARA Persecution. The statute being used against them is 18 U.S.C. § 951, a statute related to the Foreign Agents Registration Act (U.S.C. § 611) but permitting a longer maximum prison sentence of 10 years. They are also charged under 18 USC 371, conspiracy to commit an offense against the U.S. Government, which carries a 5 year prison sentence.

We are looking for First Amendment experts and others comfortable with drafting an amicus brief to join members of the Mass Incarceration Committee and the International Committee to work on this brief!

Please contact international@nlg.org if you are interested in joining the team working on this, or would like more information. The sooner we do this, the better. The motion to dismiss on First Amendment grounds is still technically pending, as the judge hasn't yet ruled on the magistrate's recommendation to deny it. Trial is set for September 3rd.

The motion to dismiss and other legal filing are available here: handsoffuhuru.org/motiontodismiss

Building Multispecies Resistance Against Exploitation Webinar

The NLG Animal Liberation Committee is excited to announce a new webinar!

This panel, featuring all contributors to Building Multispecies Resistance Against Exploitation: Stories from the Frontlines of Labor and Animal Rights (Peter Lang, 2024), delves into the intricate web of exploitation prevalent across various sectors of labor, ranging from meatpacking and slaughterhouses to the seemingly altruistic realms of the non-profit industrial complex. By examining these intersections, the panel aims to shed light on the multifaceted dimensions of exploitation affecting nonhuman animals, humans, and the Earth itself.

Call for NLG Scholars

The NLG is working to expand and connect our Scholar Network! Many Guild members are law professors, legal scholars, clinical faculty, writers, practitioners, and researchers who teach, publish, and speak regularly. NLG Scholars brings together our academic members and helps students, activists, and the media find NLG thinkers and speakers who offer a leftist political analysis of various legal issues.

If you would like to be added to the national NLG Scholar email list, please email NLG Director of Research and Education Traci Yoder at traci@nlg.org. We plan to hold a meeting for NLG Scholars in the near future, so please join the list to be included.

Support Our Haywood Burns Fellows!

Since 1973, the NLG has been funding the summer work of legal workers and law students seeking to build their progressive legal skills. The Haywood Burns Memorial Fellowships for Social and Economic Justice were named in 1997 for renowned social justice lawyer and beloved former Guild President Haywood Burns, who is remembered by students as an exceptional teacher and dedicated mentor.

We can't continue provide this critical support without your contributions, so we encourage those who can to give back!
