Lamis Deek is an attorney and organizer in New York City. In this interview, Lamis reflects on what attracted her to the Guild, the inspiration she drew from the Black liberation movement, and the support she received from Guild elders. She also talks about the founding of the NLG’s Muslim Defense Committee, which emerged in the wake of increased surveillance of Muslim-Americans in 2008. Placed in the context of many years of Guild work with oppressed communities, Deek shares the unique work that marked the committee’s beginnings in New York as well as her thoughts on the future of the Guild.
