What: The NLG Far West Region, which includes all NLG chapters and members in Nevada, California, Hawaii, and Alaska, will be hosting a three-day legal conference for community activists and legal professionals. The conference will include dual-track programming including: workshops, panel discussions, resources, CLE credits for legal professionals, and social events.

This event will bridge the too-often separate movements of organizing and lawyering to amplify our abilities by working together. Be inspired by an amazing array of speakers from the region in panels, participatory workshops, intimate break-out sessions, and practical trainings to combat government and systemic oppression and improve your practice.
The featured keynote speaker, Mia Yamamoto, in her own words, was “born doing time,” in a Japanese internment camp in 1946. She has received numerous awards honoring her dedication to social and economic justice as a civil rights lawyer and leading criminal defender. Mia identified as trans long before she began presenting as feminine in her 50s and she co-founded Asian Pacific Islander Law Student Association at UCLA school of law in the 1970s.
On Friday night we will create space for local Central Valley immigration rights activists to tell their stories about the local work to provide legal, emotional, spiritual, and community support and power-building in Central Valley immigrant communities. We will feature speakers from SIREN, CIVIIC, Radio Bilingue, ICE Out of Fresno, KIIND, and more.

The conference will showcase community leaders and advocates fighting to advance justice with an eye towards centering the work of grassroots movements. Two solid blocks of programming will focus on urgent issues in our region: Immigration and Housing/Homelessness. Three concurrent afternoon sessions will address the affordable housing crisis, the criminalization of homelessness, and local, regional, and legal strategies and tactics towards fighting for housing justice. Three afternoon sessions will relate to immigrant community defense and resilience, rapid response, direct legal services, working with unaccompanied minors and more. The brand new Hawaiian Kingdom Subcommittee (est. 2019) will present a special panel and workshop on the history of the occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom, and its impact on the rights of Protected Persons by the State of Hawai’i and Federal Government.Hear from speakers’ varied real-life lived experiences and learn from revolutionary individuals standing up to challenge and transforming systems in creative ways. You will be inspired by fresh ideas and leave with a toolbox full of creative, innovative, and empowering legal and organizing strategies to advocate in and for your community.

**Registration is required for all participants and is sliding scale $0-$50 based on need and position**
Solidarity Housing: There is a limited amount of free ‘solidarity housing’ for individuals that are unable to pay for accommodations for the event.
