The NLG Task Force on the Americas authored this letter to US Ambassador to Honduras, Lisa Kubiske, in response to the murders of two human rights activists, attorney José Nicolás Bernárdez and Judge Lenin Castañeda, on March 14, 2014. As the letter states:
The National Lawyers Guild calls on Secretary of State John Kerry to halt U.S. military aid to Egypt, given the country's ongoing violation of human rights and international law.
The National Lawyers Guild is a proud member of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL), an international organization of jurists' associations that have made the violation of human rights and threats to international peace and security legal issues under international law, since 1946. The President of IADL is longtime Guild member and NLG International Committee (IC) Co-Chair, Jeanne Mirer.
The National Lawyers Guild affirms its strongest support for hunger striking prisoners in California, Guantánamo Bay, Colombia, and Palestine, and urges members and supporters to participate in and defend actions of solidarity protesting solitary confinement, arbitrary detention, and other rights violations. The Guild’s Prisoner Hunger Strike Solidarity Committee calls on people to take action to support the prisoners.
America should seize upon the election of a new Iranian president and immediately lift all sanctions.
The “Leahy Law” prohibits the United States from sending aid to security forces that commit “gross violations of human rights.” Israel is not exempt from this rule.
