Human Rights Groups Submit Complaint to UN re: Israeli Military Arrest, Detention and Indicment of Palestinian Legislator and Activist Khalida Jarrar

London, Ramallah and New York, 16 June 2015 – Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights (LPHR), Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association (Addameer) and the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) have submitted a joint complaint to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights Defenders (UNSR) concerning the Israeli military arrest, detention and indictment of the Palestinian human rights defender, Ms Khalida Jarrar.

NLG Food Justice Guidelines

At the April 2015 National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the NEC appointed a subcommittee to develop food justice guidelines for the national Law for the People Convention to address food justice issues intersectionally. The subcommittee created the guidelines below and were approved by the Guild's Executive Council (EC).

NLG Palestine Subcommittee Submits Report to ICC Prosecutor Refuting Israeli Self-Defense Claim

The NLG International Committee’s Palestine Subcommittee has submitted a report to the ICC prosecutor with facts showing that Israeli air and ground attacks on Palestinian territory preceded Hamas and non-Hamas rocket fire, and thus could not have been in self-defense; in fact, these attacks actually sparked a vast increase in rocket fire.

Since Jan. 16, when Fatou Bensouda, the chief prosecutor of the ICC, opened a preliminary examination into the situation in Palestine, Israel has forced the resignation of the head of the United Nations inquiry into Operation Protective Edge and called on members of the tribunal to cut funding to the court. “So long as any institution for the prosecution of war crimes exists, the Israeli state knows that under any system of justice it’s their leaders and officials that are going to be facing prosecution for their ongoing and systematic war crimes against the Palestinian people,” said Charlotte Kates, the coordinator for the National Lawyers Guild International Committee.

New Yorkers Denounce City Council Trip to Israel

The trip, scheduled to take place in February will be all expenses paid, sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council and the United Jewish Appeal, two pro-Israeli foundations that have a combined budget of over a billion dollars. 15 members of the New York City Council will participate, including Council speaker Melissa Mark-Vevirito. Representatives of various community organizations gathered to denounce the proposed trip, among them was Fatin Jarrara, from the New York City Al-Awda Right to Return Coalition.
