On August 4, 2014, the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) and nine other human rights organizations sent the following letter to President Obama and other White House officials calling for a full, independent investigation into the beating and unlawful detention of 15-year-old Palestinian-American Tariq Abu Khdeir by Israeli police. Read the full press statement about the letter here.
On April 20, 2014, Turkish sociologist and PEN Honorary Member Professor Ismail Beşikçi was prevented from boarding a plane to the United States at the Ataturk International Airport in Istanbull, Turkey. This was based on unspecified security reasons, despite having been issued a valid visa to travel by the Department of State.
The Maryland and D.C. Chapters of the NLG, along with the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and Defending Dissent Foundation (DDF) submitted this letter to the Conference Committee for the Budget of the Maryland General Assembly, expressing concern over the proposed Amendment 923228/1 of Budget Bill SB 170.
The NLG Task Force on the Americas authored this letter to US Ambassador to Honduras, Lisa Kubiske, in response to the murders of two human rights activists, attorney José Nicolás Bernárdez and Judge Lenin Castañeda, on March 14, 2014. As the letter states:
The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) and the Council on American-Islamic Relations-USA (CAIR-USA) sent members of the House of Representatives Education and the Workforce Committee a letter urging them to oppose legislation that would deny federal funding to colleges and universities that participate in a boycott of Israeli academic institutions or scholars. According to the legislation’s sponsors, H.R. 4009 was drafted in response to the American Studies Association’s recent resolution to boycott Israeli academic institutions.
