Philadelphia Convention: Travel Stipends for Legal Activists of Color

TUPOCC Co-Chairs

The United People of Color Caucus (TUPOCC), the National Student Vice Presidents, and the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) are pleased to announce, once again, the availability of travel stipends for law students of color, recent graduates of color, and legal workers of color to attend the annual NLG Law for the People Convention in Philadelphia (October 12-16, 2011 - http://www.nlg.org/members/convention/).

The stipend plays an important role in changing the Guild as an institution. In 2005, the NEC instituted the stipend in recognition that the NLG's flagship event had perennially failed to draw the kind of participation by comrades of color that would befit a truly progressive legal organization. The travel stipend and other measures are meant to challenge that trend. The travel stipend will cover a portion of transportation costs to the convention. It does not cover housing and registration costs.

This year's application is available online at http://bit.ly/aXpWiS. The deadline for submitting applications is 8 PM EST on Friday, September 16, 2011. Applicants will receive a decision by September 19, 2011.  Eligibility is limited to legal workers, law students, and recent law graduates who self-identify as people of color. Women, LGBTQIA comrades, and persons with disabilities are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants should be sure to read the instructions on the application completely. Documentation of transportation costs is required.

See you in Philadelphia!
