Carol Sobel

Executive Vice President, Co-Chair, Mass Defense Committee

Biography

Carol Sobel is an Executive Vice President of the Guild and co-chair of the NLG Mass Defense Committee. Currently in private practice in Santa Monica, California, Carol spent 20 years working for the ACLU. Many of her cases were also brought on behalf of the NLG. She has spent months walking the streets of Skid Row to meet with the homeless people affected by police repression in Los Angels, has provided legal support at every major demonstration in LA, and was shot by the police in the face with rubber bullets during the 2000 Democratic National Convention.

Among her significant constitutions rights cases are Barakat v. Arellano (LA8); Multi-ethnic Immigrant Workers Organizing Network (MIWON) v. City of Los Angeles (May Day litigation); National Lawyers Guild v. City of Los Angeles (mass civil rights violations during the DNC) and Killmon v. City of Miami (class action lawsuit from mass civil rights violations during the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas, on behalf of the NLG Mass Defense Committee).
