Major Panel: The Intersection of Militarism & Sexism
Friday, November 2, 2007
Sponsored by the Anti-Sexism Committee and co-sponsored by the Military Law Task Force

Speakers will examine the implications of war and military occupation on women’s lives.

One speaker will discuss the presence of the American military in the Philippines and its impact on Filipina women, and will use the highly publicized Subic rape trial to frame their presentation.

Another presenter will examine the impact of the war in Iraq on the lives of Iraqi women in the context of violence against women at the hands of foreign soldiers. Further, the presentation will examine how the war has caused the social and justice systems in Iraq to disintegrate, and in the process has made women more vulnerable to violence and without access to justice.

Also, one of the speakers will address the situation of women and girls that flee civil wars in some African countries and take shelter in refugee camps. Human rights organizations have widely reported that many displaced women and girls are raped or coerced into sex by soldiers and peacekeepers.

In addition, the panel will examine common patterns of violence and the underlying issues of sexism, sexual violence and homophobia that motivate military training and discipline in the US army and armies abroad. The panel will also discuss action that activists can take to fight militarism and sexism, and to support the women affected.
